Geology Majors and Minors

Students wishing to choose a geology major should consult the Chair of the Department early in their university career. The geology program includes a required core curriculum for all majors plus additional courses from a choice of two options: the Geology Option and the Environmental Geology Option. Therefore, no single curriculum can be listed for all majors.

All students majoring in geology are required to take 31 semester hours from the core curriculum of nine courses plus additional courses from a number of choices in the Geology Option or the Environmental Geology Option to make a total of 40 semester hours. See below for a detailed explanation under the heading "Geology Major Requirements." Geology majors are assigned a department advisor in order to plan the program best suited to their goals and interests.

One of the two Options should be selected by all geology majors. Depending upon the Option chosen, one or two courses will be required in addition to the core. Other courses needed to complete the Option can be chosen from several choices after consultation with the student's advisor. The Option can be changed at any time. Such a change would not require the student to take the full complement of three courses in the new Option should that cause the total semester hours in geology to exceed the required total.

Students who major in geology with the Environmental Geology Option must complete the following courses in addition to the required geology curriculum: MTH 133 or 138 or 233 and MTH 220 or 234; CHE 133, 133L, 134 and 134L and 330; PHY 131, 131L, 132 and 132L or BIO 131, 131L and 133 and 133L; CSC 101; and ENG 273.

Students who major in geology with the Geology Option must complete MTH 233 and 220 or 234; CHE 133, 133L, 134, and 134L; PHY 131, 131L, 132 and 132L; CSC 101; and ENG 273.

A minor in geology consists of six courses or a minimum of 18 semester hours of which at least six hours must be advanced. Students plan their minor program in consultation with a Geology advisor. Suggested minors are: chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, business, computer science, and geography.
