SEMESTER  OBJECTIVES FOR NURSING STUDENTS

Semester 1

The student will:

Provider of Care

  1. Demonstrate the ability to perform a health assessment on an individual client.
  2. Select goals and develop plans of care for individuals based on analysis of available data using theoretical knowledge.
  3. Provide nursing care within legal and ethical parameters to the individual client.
  4. Identify learning needs for individuals with common health problems.
  5. Assist in evaluating and modifying the plan of care for individual client responses to nursing interventions.
  6. Provide direct nursing care to culturally diverse client(s) in a structured care setting.
  7. Use nursing process to guide delivery of nursing care to individual clients.

Member of Profession

  1. Provide safe holistic care to individual clients under instructor supervision.
  2. Identify situations requiring advocacy.
  3. Recognize the role of the professional nurse in the delivery of health care.

Coordinator of Care

  1. Identify resources needed for the delivery of care to individual clients in in-patient (acute care and residential) settings.
  2. Participate in the planning and delivery of nursing care to individual clients as a supervised member of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  3. Identify need for individual client referrals.
  4. Identify roles and functions of members of the interdisciplinary health care team.

 Semester 2

The student will:

Provider of Care

1.      Apply knowledge based on theoretical and conceptual principles and research methodology to assess persons and families with identified physical and or psychiatric problems.

2.      Formulate goals and develop plans of care for individuals and families based on analysis of available data using theoretical knowledge in collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team.

  1. Provide legal, ethical, and collaborative care to individuals and family members in the acute care, residential and community settings.
  2. Develop and implement teaching plans for individual clients with health care needs.
  3. Evaluate and modify the plan of care for individual clients in collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team.
  4. Provide for care of culturally diverse individual client(s) in collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team.
  5. Use critical thinking along with evidence-based practice to guide delivery of nursing care to individual clients.

Member of Profession

1.      Assume responsibility and accountability for providing safe, effective nursing to individuals and families.

2.      Act as an advocate for individuals and families in the various care settings.  Critique research studies for application/use to guide nursing practice.

3.      Identify avenues for promoting the profession and improving quality of health care.

Coordinator of Care

1.      Identify appropriate resources available to clients and their families in community and acute care settings

2.      Include collaborative interventions in planning and delivering care to clients.

3.      Assess and identify necessary resources and services based on changing needs of clients and their families and refer to the interdisciplinary health care team for necessary services.

4.      Identify changes needed in policies and procedures. Adapt to changing roles and functions of the professional nurse in varied health care settings.

Semester 3

The student will:

Provider of Care

  1. Apply knowledge based on theoretical, conceptual, and research methodology to assess persons throughout the life cycle. Apply knowledge based on theoretical, conceptual, and research methodology to assess communities
  2. Formulate goals and develop plans of care for individuals, families, and communities based on analysis of available data using theoretical knowledge in collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  3. Provide legal, ethical, and collaborative care to individuals, families, and communities in the acute and community settings.
  4. Develop and implement teaching plans and be a resource for health education and information for individual clients and their families.
  5. Analyze, evaluate, and modify the plan of care for culturally diverse individuals and families.
  6. Identify priorities and organize nursing care of multiple clients and families.
  7. Apply evidence-based practice and research findings to delivery of care to individual clients and families.

Member of Profession

1.      Assume responsibility and accountability for providing safe, effective nursing care to individuals, families and groups.

2.      Identify problems in delivering health care and advocate for individuals, families, and groups using research based nursing knowledge.

3.      Participate in activities which promote consumer awareness of Nursing’s contribution to society.

Coordinator of Care

  1. Manage peers and material resources in the delivery of care to individuals, families, and groups.
  2. Implement care for individuals, families, and groups in collaboration with clients and the interdisciplinary health care team.
  3. Assess, identify, and refer individuals, families, and groups to the interdisciplinary health care team and community resources for necessary services.
  4. Assess changing roles and functions of the professional nurse as a facilitator for the client within the organization and environmental structure.
  5. Assess organizational environments to promote safe and effective care of individuals, families, and groups.

Semester 4

Terminal Objectives (Outcomes)

The student will:

1. Apply knowledge of the physical, social and behavioral sciences in the provision of nursing care based on theory, research and evidence-based practice.

2.  Deliver nursing care within established legal and ethical parameters in collaboration with clients and members of the interdisciplinary health care team.

3.  Provide holistic nursing care to individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole while respecting individual and cultural diversity.

4.  Demonstrate effective leadership that fosters independent thinking and collaborative communication in the management of nursing care.

5.  Assume responsibility and accountability for delivery of safe and effective nursing care.

6.  Serve as an advocate for clients and for the profession of nursing.

7.  Demonstrate continuing competence, growth and development in the profession
