Goals of the College of Science and Mathematics
A primary aim of the College of Sciences and Mathematics
is to contribute to the liberal education of all students through the presentation
of fundamental concepts and methods of science and mathematics. Another
objective is to provide the counseling and fundamental education required
for professional programs in health and engineering sciences and for professional
studies and careers of a scientific or mathematical nature.
Undergraduate Taking Graduate Work for Credit
See the Graduate Bulletin, Admission Section, Overlap
Program Admission.
Choice of Major Program in Sciences and Mathematics
After the completion of not less than 45 semester hours of course work,
students should select major and minor programs and prepare an outline of
degree requirements with the assistance of the Dean of the College of Sciences
and Mathematics and their departmental adviser. In order to be accepted
as a major student in this College, a student must have attained a minimum
C average for all work taken in the intended major department. All undergraduate
major programs in the College of Sciences and Mathematics lead to the Bachelor
of Science degree.
Certification for High School Science and
Mathematics Teaching
The minimum requirements for science and mathematics teaching
fields for candidates for high school certificates are outlined in the College
of Education section of this Bulletin. If the first area of concentration
is biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, or mathematics, the candidates
must complete major requirements of not less than 30 hours in the department
concerned, and all required courses outside the major department supporting
the major.
The Advisory Program
All students in the College of Sciences and Mathematics,
in consultation with the dean and the chair of a department, select a faculty
adviser. The program for each semester, the major and minor programs, and
all other requirements for the baccalaureate degree are worked out by the
student in consultation with the adviser. Participation in this counseling
program is a requirement for all students registered in this college and
provides each with the opportunity to secure qualified advice regarding
academic problems and programs.
Goethe-Miller College of Sciences and Mathematics
Annual Award
This is an annual award to an outstanding senior major in
the College of Sciences and Mathematics. C.M. Goethe of Sacramento, California,
E. L. Miller, former Dean of the Stephen F. Austin State University College
of Sciences and Mathematics, and others have contributed to the fund. The
recipient is selected by the Dean of the College and the Academic Vice President,
upon the recommendations of the College1s department chair. Each department
chair presents to the Dean of the College on March 1 the name of the outstanding
senior who is a major in the department, giving primary consideration to
scholarship, personal qualifications, and dedication to professional goals.
Only those planning to pursue graduate programs in the sciences and mathematics
are considered. To be eligible for consideration a student must have completed
at least 100 semester hours on the SFA campus. Grades completed elsewhere
are not considered and in the case of repeated courses on the SFA campus,
all grades for such courses are included in the computation.
Procedures for Reinstatement of Students on
Suspension
Students in the College of Sciences and Mathematics whose
academic record is such that they are placed on suspension should contact
the Dean1s Office as soon as possible after having received grades with
a notice of suspension. This must be done prior to registration for the
next long term or summer session.
1. Students who have gone on suspension status as the result of grades in
a fall semester may be considered for reinstatement for the spring semester
under the following conditions:
a. If the student is on suspension as a result of less than 6 grade points
deficiency;
b. If the low grades resulted from some bonafide unusual circumstance or
problem such as illness or personal emergency;
c. If the suspension status resulted from prior grades in courses no longer
appropriate to the course of study presently being undertaken and grades
in courses which are a part of present course of study are satisfactory;
d. If the grade deficiency is such that it can be cleared by adequate and
reasonable grades and the student could by making those grades graduate
at the end of the spring semester.
2. Students who go on suspension in a spring semester may request to be
excused from the requirement of summer school at Stephen F. Austin under
the following conditions:
a. If their grade situation is one of those described (in1 a, b, c)
above and they can demonstrate a valid personal or financial reason which
precludes their being on campus in the summer;
b. If the courses which need to be taken to meet the provisions of the university
policy, or other courses appropriate to the student1s degree plan are not
being offered in the summer.
3. Students on suspension who are allowed to return to school ordinarily
must repeat enough hours of D and F courses so that they satisfy the minimum
standards as stated under the scholastic probation and suspension section
of this catalog.
